Alternative and Post Purchase Evaluation

Disclaimer: I was unable to find any pilots available to interview, but I was able to find 3 people who knew or were related to pilots who were able to answer these questions.

Jared

Summary: All three of them agreed that based on the pilots they knew, they would think that price wouldn't be an important factor when evaluating alternatives where as quality, durability, and functionality all would be. They also said that while most pilots tend to have a certain "style", the style or design of the product would be a benefit, but not a factor in a decision. Jared and Jay were both able to say that the product's price was not important and that the person would most likely buy it in a store rather than online so that they could hold it and ask questions before buying it. Claude was the most insightful interview as he does engineering and design classes for students at a high school in Miami, and was able to give great feedback. Claude's main point was that if it provided a safer alternative to a current method, than price was a moot point and that the purchase was good. If it hindered safety or took longer than the current method, it was a bad purchase.

Price: Not Important
Quality: Extremely Important
Durability: Important
Style: Beneficial, not a deciding factor

Online: Would research online, but buy in store
Store: Most likely to be purchased in store.

Important Factors After Purchase: Funcionality, does it do what it says it does and do it well
Good Purchase: It saves time and increases safety, it's durable.
Bad Purchase: It hinders safety, takes more time, or breaks easily

  1. Hi Tyler. First off, your interviews are well executed and gave me a good grasp of what your product would do. I agree with your interviewees in that price may not be much of a factor when safety is the goal of the product. Pilots know the risks they are facing so something that can make them safer in the air could be successful. Additionally, durability for something like this would be crucial if it is a physical product, while if it were an application it would need to be easy to use. Overall, I think you have a great idea and should look into making it for private pilots.

  2. Tyler,

I think this product would work well as an app. Of course, for it to be successful as an app, it would have to be easy to access and use. Also, being an app for pilots flying planes, it would have to have top notch safety features. Great idea though, and very interesting interviews.

  3. Hi Tyler!
In listening to your interviews, I got a feel for what your idea was. I have to be honest, it's a little hard for me to relate to this as I am not a pilot and your idea is pretty specific. AS someone who is not a pilot, but a passenger, it sounds like a good idea. I know that your demographic is not necessarily big passenger planes, but if I were flying in a small airplane, I would certainly appreciate them being more focused.
When you say "style", I'm not real sure what you mean. Flying style? Work style? Aesthetic style? MAybe I missed something. Anyway, I think that everything seems to be spot on, pricing wouldn't be an issue for a safer routine implementing a quality product.

  4. Hi Tyler,

It does seem from your interviews that no one agreed that price would be a major factor in your product. That really surprised me since from the posts that I have read so far had interviewees who stated that price is such a major factor for a product for an idea. But I guess having good quality and durability overshadows price as being a major factor for your product. 5. Tyler,

First, for future reference could you set up your sound cloud links. Now, from listening to your interviews I think you show great poise and presences. Personally I don't know much about flying, however, understanding the interviews I think that this product will be quite helpful. Also, I think the first interviewee was very helpful structuring your interview questions better.

  6. Tyler, I think pushing through the adversity of not having people to interview and finding the next best thing was brilliant. It shows how much you care and are willing to work in this class. Also, I think the interviews were very well put together and executed. The interviews did allow me to see and opportunity for the product to grow with technology as maybe even and application on smart phones.

  7. I really appreciate how you creatively dealt with your problem of interviewing people. You took into consideration what they said and the most important thing that you can do is to listen to your customers and those who know the customers well. I also appreciate how you've asked them about price specifically and come to understand how that effects the market.

  8. Hey Tyler,

I liked your interview; I felt like you asked good questions and got solid answers out of all the participants! I think it is understandable that quality is the most important factor for a pilot. It is somewhat surprising that price is not a big deal at all because it seems like price is always a pretty big deal. I can definitely imagine why having some style is fairly important too! 9. Hi Tyler,

I honestly don't know anything about piloting an aircraft; however, from a potential passenger's point of view, it seems like a really great idea safety-wise. I agree with Seamus in that this seems like it could do well as an app, although I understand if pilots would prefer buying a separate physical device to have in the cockpit. Great job overall!

  10. I think that they make good points, when safety and durability are important factors sometimes you have to overlook the price and realize that it's worth it. Especially with things like aircraft. You did a great job on this assignment and it's great that they were able to give you some direction on things to focus on.
